If you have taken the CSET one or more times without passing, or if you scored below the 70-80% level on your CSET practice test, you may wish to consider taking a CSET Prep Class. CSET Prep classes are offered throughout California in areas such as Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, and the San Fernando Valley. You may wish to visit the CSET Tutor website to view a complete listing of their classes and see if they have an upcoming CSET Prep Class that's right for you.
UPDATE: The CSET Tutor Program is now part of Teachers Test Prep, which offers an expanded set of prep class offerings. You can now find enrollment info for both CSET Single Subject and CSET Multiple Subjects Prep classes at the Teachers Test Prep website. These prep classes include a CSET Multiple Subjects Prep Class (prep course for the exam taken by most California elementary school teachers), CSET Math Prep Class (prep course for California secondary Mathematics teachers), CSET Science Prep Class (prep course for the general science exam given to secondary general science teachers), CSET Social Science Prep Class (prep course for the exam taken by secondary history and social science teachers), and CSET English Prep Class (prep course for secondary school English and literature teachers), as well as a CBEST Prep Class (prep course for the California Basic Educational Skills Test covering reading, writing and mathematics) and RICA Prep Class (prep course for the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment for early elementary educators). All of the aforementioned prep classes are offered at locations throughout the state.
A quality CSET prep class will generally focus on subject matter review, while at the same time giving you some strategic test-taking tips and techniques you can use to make the most of your knowledge. The CSET covers a vast amount of material, so you may need to enroll in several prep classes or a full-weekend CSET prep course in order to cover all of the material you will need. And remember that popular, well-known CSET prep classes often sell out, so you'll want to register as early as possible in order to ensure availability.
On the day of your prep class, make sure to bring writing materials and come prepared to take extensive notes. You'll want to have these to review as the test approaches. Also, to make the most of your CSET Prep Class, start studying ahead of time and come prepared with a list of concepts you're unclear on. As the class progresses, you can check off the concepts you've learned, and can then ask your instructor about anything you still need help with.
